Traffic Modelling

Opus’ traffic modelling specialists provide effective transportation modelling and economic evaluation solutions, using a wide range of macro, micro and intersection simulation models.  This supports a range of master planning and transportation planning scenarios, and integrates fully with our Planning and Environmental teams.

We have experts in all aspects of transportation modelling within New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK, and they have delivered many major land use assessments and evaluation of transportation infrastructure projects.

Four stage and network assignment modelling is used to assess the macro effects of new projects and land use changes.  This recognises the link between land use, urban design and transportation planning.  Micro simulation modelling is used to assess the effectiveness of projects and improvements at a vehicular level with realistic visual simulation which greatly assists the consultation process.  Intersection modelling and optimisation is also undertaken to provide operational improvements.

Northen Busway & Esmonde Interchange, Auckland, New Zealand

The project involved major improvements to the existing Esmonde/Akoranga interchange to provide full connectivity between the motorway, local roads and the new Northern Busway.  This involved building a full macro model of the North Shore in SATURN to assess the effects of various scheme options and to support the planning consent process.  The model was subsequently extended to include West Auckland as part of the Upper Harbour Corridor Project.

A18/A180 Link Road, North East Lincolnshire, UK

Opus was commissioned to produce an application for DfT funding in the form a Major Scheme Business Case (Annex E application). The application is for a new strategic link road that would provide a designated and appropriate route for HGV’s travelling to and from the Immingham Docks, the UK’s largest port.

Eastern Transport Corridor, Auckland, New Zealand

This project involved the preparation of a scheme assessment and assessment of environmental affects for a 27 km long multi modal transport corridor between Auckland and Manukau Cities via their eastern suburbs.  This involved the identification and investigation of a large number of alignment and form options along with various mode options (passenger transport, roading, walking and cycling).   Development of a recommended option was via a rigorous and transparent evaluation process involving consideration of engineering, environmental, social, economic and transportation effects.  The assessment involved micro simulation modelling and area wide macro traffic modelling.
