Road Safety

 

Road safety is an inherent part of all transportation engineering projects that are undertaken. Opus has a large and experienced team in the road safety field with specialist personnel in many of our offices, both nationally and internationally who have been part of award winning projects. They focus on reducing both the severity and number vehicle crashes, by developing and implementing both site specific and systemic solutions based on a coordinated multidisciplinary approach.

We have a dedicated road safety group within New Zealand, and our team in Canada is a preferred supplier for safety services. In addition we have experts in Australia, the United States and the UK providing a wide range of services to local authority and government sector organisations.

Special Crash Reduction Study, New Zealand

The objective of the project was to reduce the number and severity of crashes on a high traffic volume section of SH2 (in North Island, New Zealand).  This was achieved by coordinating a multi disciplinary approach with inputs from numerous agencies involved in education, enforcement and engineering programmes (the 3E’s) combined with input from the local community.

                                                                                   

Older Driver Study, Canada

As part of the Older Driver Pilot Project in the City of Vernon (in British Columbia, Canada), Opus Hamilton, in consultation with the city, identified intersections for safety improvements that may benefit older drivers.

Road Safety Audits, Golden Ears Bridge, Canada

As part of its Regional Growth Strategy, the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority is embarked on a project to construct the Golden Ears Bridge over the Fraser River.  The project entails construction of a new six-lane bridge with a span of one kilometre, along with 15 kilometres of new roads.

Deerfoot Trail Median Safety Review, Calgary, Canada

Deerfoot Trail is the primary north-south expressway through the City of Calgary in the Province of Alberta, and is part of the CANAMEX (Canada – United States – Mexico) Trade Corridor.  It provides a six-lane cross-section and carries up to 140,000 vehicles per day. Currently, it has a depressed grassy median that varies in width between 17 and 31 metres.  An increase in recent years in the number of fatal head-on collisions raised questions as to the need for raised separation.  Opus Hamilton was retained by Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation to conduct an in-service road safety review to analyze the safety benefits of providing a barrier as compared to the current condition.
