Traffic Signal Audits, New Zealand

Country: New Zealand
Key Area: Transportation
Services: Traffic Engineering

Although the audit was initiated by the local authority, it was undertaken by a team whose members were nominated by the National Traffic Signals Committee on behalf of Transfund New Zealand. The purpose of the audit was to identify issues with traffic signal design, maintenance and operation, and make recommendations that will help improve the safety and efficiency of traffic signal control.

The audits inspected over 150 existing installations, investigating the signals during peak hour operation, off peak operation and during the evening, with a view to identifying critical, important and general elements of the design and then answering the following questions about each installation:

  • Layout, Signing, Roadmarking and Associated Hardware
  • Signal Displays and Hardware
  • Phasing and Operation
Opus had been involved in the first 4 major ‘city’ audits for Waitakere City, Manukau City, Tauranga and Wellington.
