Older Driver Study, City of Vernon, Canada

Country: Canada
Key Area: Transportation
Services: Road Safety

As part of the Older Driver Pilot Project in the City of Vernon (in British Columbia, Canada), Opus Hamilton, in consultation with the City, identified intersections for safety improvements that may benefit older drivers. “Before” observational studies were undertaken at the intervention sites in the fall of 2005 so research could be completed to identify the benefits of the engineering changes.

The engineering changes have now been completed and include improvements such as aligning the left-turn lanes, installing lane use signs, installing pedestrian countdown timers, and increasing the signal heads. Observational studies are being repeated to determine the extent of the safety benefits for older drivers.
