The Northern Busway will provide a major public transport facility between North Shore and Auckland cities to enable rapid transit bus services.  Opus has been central to the development of the Busway, and the associated Esmonde Interchange since 1997 and led the detailed design and construction management phases for the southern sector and the Busway stations. 

The project provides a dedicated 2 lane busway alongside the northern motorway together with five busway stations, interchange upgrades and associated local road and pedestrian improvements.  The alignment is adjacent to sensitive marine areas which have required environmental protection.  The design solutions addressed construction staging to provide effective temporary traffic management together with the innovative use of polystyrene blocks as light-weight fill material for bridge approaches on weak ground.
