Auckland’s Newmarket Viaduct is the busiest stretch of motorway in New Zealand. Built in the 1960's the viaduct is one of the most impressive urban motorway engineering structures for its era. Opus/Beca was commissioned by Transit to investigate options to reduce congestion and improve the safety and seismic performance of the viaduct.
The solution involves a complete deconstruction and replacement of the viaduct while keeping the traffic live. Opus successfully undertook the environmental assessments, community consultation and secured the necessary statutory approvals within a year and has received commendation from the client for its efficiency and major contribution to the project's success.
