Logan City Council is the third largest Council within Australia. As part of the Queensland Council amalgamations in 2008 Logan City Council is now responsible for parts of the former Gold Coast City Council and Beaudesert Regional Council areas. The length of the current road network is 2,040km.
In an effort to ensure that more accurate asset management and maintenance services could be provided by Council, Logan required their entire road network to be reblocked.
Reblocking involves the division of road centerline information into logical segments of defined lengths in a GIS system. The project was undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 involved creating new road centre line layers within MapInfo for the Gold Coast and Beaudesert areas transferred to Logan City Council as these areas had no pre-existing GIS data. Gold Coast included 280km of roads, and Beaudesert 785km of roads. Within the pre-existing Logan area the original centre line layer required updating and validating. No single block length could exceed 500m. Phase 2 involves provision of ongoing support in the updating of this and other road asset data.
For phase 1 Opus utilised our in-house GIS specialists based in Queensland, with further specialist advice being provided by the Sydney team as required. We were able to offer Council fully compatible outputs which eliminated the need for post-processing prior to the upload of information into Council’s systems. The expertise available in the Sydney team allowed for independent technical reviews to be undertaken of the outputs prior to delivery to Logan City Council. Full field validation of the first phase of the blocking was undertaken as part of the Pavement Visual Condition Assessment Contract also won by Opus. This project is now in phase 2 with Opus providing an as required service to Logan City Council for the ongoing update of their blocking and road asset data.
Logan received the following benefits through engagement of Opus on this project:
- System compatibility
- Skilled local GIS team
- Interstate expertise available to undertake technical reviews of the outputs
- Additional resources as required to provide ongoing support.
