The Hihitahi Bluffs reconstruction involved realignment of 3.5km of SH1 between Waiouru and Taihape in the Central North Island.
The Opus design which included 3 new bridges addressed problems including substandard alignment, poor sight distance and icing due to topographic effects which all contributed to a high accident rate.
The alignment and structures were designed to minimise impact on the native bush in this environmentally sensitive area. The harsh climate, difficult construction access and short earthwork construction period were key challenges to this successful project which was completed in 2007.
