The Britomart Transportation Centre project is comprised of four distinct elements – the underground station “box”, the approach tunnel, the Chief Post Office refurbishment, and the surrounding above ground streetscapes. The final value of the overall project was NZ$204 million. Opus was responsible for the civil and structural engineering, building services engineering design, and fire engineering in association with Arup. This included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and drainage, data and telecommunications, and vertical transportation services – for all aspects of the project.
The Britomart station is unique in that it is the only underground rail station in the world that services diesel-powered rolling stock. This imposed significant challenges to fire engineering, acoustics, and air quality. The Opus/Arup team developed innovative design solutions to meet these challenges.
