Austin Hospital and the Mercy Hospital for Women, Melbourne, Australia

Country: Australia
Key Area: Buildings
Services: Civil Engineering,Structural Engineering

Opus and JMP undertook a joint venture together on this project which involved the design of Victoria’s largest hospital. Both structural and civil engineering consultancy was provided. These works included:

  • two distinctive towers housing the separate hospitals; Austin & Mercy
  • a four level, 1200 bay car park
  • refurbishment of existing buildings
  • internal access roads and realignment of external public roads
The multimillion dollar redevelopment involved extending and refurbishing the existing Austin and Repatriation Hospital sites and relocating Melbourne’s Mercy Hospital for Women adjacent to a new Austin Hospital building.  The two distinctive towers rise from a podium over the car park on an irregular steeply slopping site.  By co-locating the two hospitals the services and infrastructure of the separate developments were able to be shared.

Opus was responsible for the design documentation of all horizontal elements such as floors and walkways as well as the QA review of JMP’s scope of works. This included the QA review of the vertical elements, pre-cast concrete cladding and structural steel framing.
