Airport Terminal Upgrade, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Country: New Zealand
Key Area: Transportation
Services: Architecture
The Hawkes Bay airport terminal was the focal point of an upgrade of all existing airport facilities, including car parking, site works and control tower. The upgrades were in response to increased use of the airport, changes in security requirements and the aviation industry, and higher public quality expectations. The completed project has achieved a complete re-imaging of the building, creating a spacious and airy interior showcasing dramatic views to airside and the rural outlook and mountain ranges beyond. Extensive use of glass and hi-tech materials gives a crisp, modern appearance with an aeronautical edge. The subtle use of colour and the presence of the dramatic environment within the terminal create a strong sense of Hawke’s Bay identity and character. The project won an NZIA Award and a Resene Colour Award in 2003, and was described by Prime Minister Helen Clark at the opening as the “new benchmark in regional air terminal design.”
