John Crawford, Technical Leader - Environmental Engineering & Principal Engineer, Hamilton, New Zealand
John's influence on the TCDC Eastern Seaboard project has been exceptional. Under considerable pressure he has delivered the project on time and to a very high standard. Malinda Facey, Business Manager – Environmental Management Auckland, New Zealand
Malinda Facey has very quickly proven to be a highly effective business leader, demonstrating empathy, diplomacy, energy, strategic thinking and focus in her dealings with her team, and with her colleagues within the Division and the wider company. Malinda’s achievements in these aspects of her role have been outstanding. She took over the Environmental Management team at a time of change, with some staff losses and transfers, and also a sense of some market vulnerability with the historically high dependency on a few clients and very large projects, including the Eastern Transport Corridor project. Malinda has been instrumental in changing the outlook of her team to a more outward and diverse view of the market, leading to successful market development. Malinda has demonstrated leadership through personal commitment, energy and enthusiasm. Because of her approach, and living our values to the full, she has established excellent relationships and enjoy the support and utmost respect of her team and colleagues, which is well earned.
Murray Triggs, Business Manager – Environmental Engineering Auckland, New Zealand
Murray Triggs received impressive nominations made on his behalf. While they were readily endorsed by Murray’s manager, importantly, they were unsolicited comments made by members of his team…..“Murray cares, about the staff in his division especially, and all people, he cares about doing the job right and doing the right thing by Opus……….he is an inspiration to all around him, not a big flag waver, but dependable as a rock, his commitment inspires the same in others around him………. his balanced approach to management means he is able to steer the team to meet and exceed financial targets, as well as allowing team members to develop personally and professionally…….he respects a good work/life balance within the team and allows flexibility at work. His trust of team members ensures their ongoing commitment.” This is a wonderful acknowledgement. Clearly Murray’s leadership is of significant influence in developing a team based on strong Company values.

Matthew Thomson, Team Leader Water and Wastewater, Auckland, New Zealand
Matthew is an outstanding team leader in the Auckland Environmental Engineering business where he leads a team of eight engineers specialising in wastewater. He has been largely responsible for Opus securing the professional services contract with the Far North District Council, with this work being shared between the Whangarei office and the Auckland Environmental office. Matt is highly effective at preparing work offers, scheduling work amongst team members at various locations, and ensuring the timely delivery of all work outputs.
Brian Smith, Principal Project Manager, Auckland, New Zealand
Brian displays a consistently high level of commitment with strong personal ownership for delivery on time, cost and quality, often with innovative and unique solutions. As a key example, a temporary school had to be established on Waiheke Island within just four months of the commission being awarded. Brian’s team had to deal with site selection, community consultation, the mobilisation and management of physical works contractors, the establishment of services infrastructure for the school, and attainment of other associated approvals. Despite project setbacks, logistical difficulties posed by the island’s isolated location and a certain degree of indecision on the part of the client, the school was opened on time. Brian and his team are to be congratulated for pulling off this remarkable feat, and in so doing, reinforcing the image of Opus as a highly proficient problem solving and action oriented organisation.
Darren Gilbertson, Team Leader /Asset Manager, Paeroa, New Zealand
As Team Leader for the Hauraki District Council Roading Professional Services contract, Darren has motivated his team to deliver 97% of the annual 172 deliverables to the client on time – an outstanding result. He has instilled a “Team Opus – let’s help each other to deliver” attitude throughout the team, ensuring robust project management systems are in place to ensure delivery. As a result, all deliverables have been submitted to the client on time. A recent quote from the client was, “I am rapt with the way this project is progressing.” Since joining the Paeroa office in mid 2005, Darren’s energy and enthusiasm has become infectious. After trialling one of Darren’s project management tools, Project Quality Manage, the office is now adopting this progressively with an overall improvement in the focus and performance of the business.
